The above is a typical opening for the well-known game called Mafia. I was surprised to learn that Mafia was originally created in Soviet Union, by Dimitry Davidoff, psychology graduate student at Moscow State University. The popular group game was invented in 1986, since then the game crossed the borders and was spread all over the world.

Mafia is an absorbing psychological game. Playing Mafia in English can be extremely fun and help you to improve communication skills. It really encourages students to speak by creating enjoyable, comprehensible language experiences that lead our students to greater proficiency in English.

Here are some key phrases to play Mafia:

Nighttime/Daytime

• It is nighttime/Night is coming, so everyone close your eyes /go to sleep/is asleep/fall asleep. — Наступила ночь. Город спит.
• Mafia open your eyes and reveal themselves to each other- Мафия просыпается и знакомиться друг с другом.
• Mafia wake up/open your eyes and silently point to your victim.- мафия просыпается и выбирает свою жертву.
• Doctor wake up/open your eyes and choose someone you’d like to protect/heal/save.- Доктор просыпается и указывает на игрока, которого он хочет вылечить/спасти от гибели.
• Sheriff wake up and make your accusation /investigate. — Шериф просыпается и выносит обвинение/проводит расследование.
• It’smorning. Everyone please wake up. — Наступило утро, и все жители города просыпаются
• Sheriff found a mafia player or a peaceful one — Шериф стрелял и попал в мафию либо промахнулся.

Nomination/Accusation

• I nominate Player # because I’ve heard..- Я предлагаю кандидатуру игрока #, потому что я слышал/а…..
• Isuspect the Player# of being a member of the Mafia because he/she seems the most suspicious to me-Я подозреваю, что игрок # является членом мафиозной группировки и является наиболее подозрительной персоной для меня.
• I suggest Player# because he/she is trying to avoid being noticed -Я предлагаю игрока#, т.к. он/она пытается остаться незамеченным/-ой
• Player# looks down while he/she is talking . It can mean he/she is hiding something. — Игрок# смотрит вниз во время разговора. Это может обозначать что он/она скрывает что-то.
• His body language suggests he/she is mafia (nervous, has a red face). -Язык тела игрока дает повод полагать, что он/она является мафией (нервничает, краснеет лицо).
• Let’s vote for/against Player #. It’s a good trick to accuse his/her fellow mafia. Hepretend to be atownspeople. Давайте голосовать против игрока # он/она только претворяется мирным жителем, голосуя против участника своей группировки.

Mafia has become much more than a game, it provides players with a great experience to deal with people. You should do your best to convince people, you sort of have to sometimes pretend to be someone else in a safe game settings so that you can better cope in real situation.
